S/V Tulum-5

Tulum-5 is our second sailboat and our boat names have been in the family for the last forty years.  Tulum-4 was OUR first boat and now we’re cruising Tulum-5.  We bought her in 2018 shortly after selling Tulum-4 and we left the US for extended cruising in 2019.  Along with our kids, Great Dane and sailing cat, we’ve been out of the US cruising Central America slowly ever since.

Wanna know some more about Tulum-5?  She’s a unique sailboat.  Most folks think of “51” foot sailboats as quite large and heavy, but remember that Tulum-5 was built in the late “70’s” as a performance cruiser.  She isn’t in the same class as the classic “leaky teaky”; as down below she’s sleek and comfortable, although she’s still full of warm and welcoming natural teak.

Tulum-5 is one of only 11 Aleutian sailboats built (some in Taiwan and some in Canada) and designed by the late Canadian Naval Architect Stan Huntingford.  She was built and launched in Taiwan in 1977 and has already circumnavigated (before our time).  Although she’s younger than 50 (not a classic yet) we think we’re around to caretake, improve and modernize her.  We love this boat and the safety and comfort she’s provided our family…with two younger children and a very large Great Dane.
