India.  I specialized in colonial Indian history for my Bachelor of Arts Degree and have always wanted to go here.  So, for those of you who are following or reading my blog from India,,,,here’s your shout-out; keep it up (and follow)!!!!

I’m still in my USCG approved Captain’s license course, getting my ass kicked by all the studying and the math involved with the various navigation formulas.  It’s weird, cause I can do chart navigation just fine on my own boat, but put under the pressure in the middle of class at this school, I’m floundering a bit.  I hate to think I’m the dumbest chart person in the class, but I might be.  I knew I needed a break, so my ace broker (Clark w/ Yachtfinders and WindSeakers) mentioned yesterday that he had time to show me a Kelly Peterson that was now on the market, and I knew I needed to take him up on it.  So, I took a quick break from my studies to go look at a boat!  Two boats that I had thought of looking at were at the same Marina, so I looked at the outside of the Lafitte and all over the Peterson.

1980 Lafitte 44

First impressions of this obvious bluewater cruising sailboat were good.  Walking up to her on the dock, you could tell she had some experience and the cruising  aesthetic.  I have to say this out loud,,,” she has some crappy pictures of her online” and she looks a lot better in person than she does online.  I would get better pics if possible.  You can follow the link I imbedded above to tell me if I’m wrong, but I can tell you that just by looking at her from the outside, I was impressed,,,but remember I didn’t get to see her on the inside.  Here’s a few pics that help tell the story:

Nice anchors!!! The owner has good taste in large and hefty main bower anchors!

1977 Peterson 44

I admit it,,,,since my parents circumnavigated on a Peterson 44 and me, my wife and my brother have spent time on the boat, I may be a bit partial to it, occasionally.  This boat has been on the market for a little bit but my broker was on it last week and said it was ok.  I wanted to see it cause I’m starting to think about center cockpit sailing, so we went and took a look.  The teak decks have been removed and the boat has been mostly cleaned.  There are pretty cushions and the cockpit dodger has new canvas on it, but there are a few challenges.  Yes, on this blog we’re going to tell the truth of things, even if it smarts a bit.  This Peterson has a good price on her right now, but for me to buy it, I would have to pay a bit less.  There is no second head,,,as the one in the Master Suite has been ripped out.  All of it,,,,sink, head, wall between the head and the engine compartment and all.  Now it’s a workroom and has the non-operational water maker in it.  The boat also doesn’t have a generator, davits or HF radio.   And, if you look closer than the pretty salon table and cushions, you will see an engine that hasn’t been cleaned for a very long time, with sludge oil under it and dated electronics.  So, this boat could be a windfall as it has great bones or it could be a nightmarish cash sump,,,,,,depends on how you look at it!  Take a look at my pics:

Where the MASTER Bath used to be,,,yep, that hole goes right into the engine compartment,,,,ummm, dream of the smells!

    1. The Kelly Peterson 44 in San Diego isn’t that expensive and the rumor is that the owner would take $50k for it,,,and may self-finance,,,he wants to get rid of it-
